Apprenticeships are on the increase, but developing vital skills and experience before starting will give learners a real head start

There is no doubt that apprenticeships at all levels provide an excellent return on investment for individuals, employers and government. Indeed, recent research has found that the return to each £1 of public funding produces a net public benefit of £16 for a Level 2 apprenticeship and £17 for Level 3.

14-16 qualifications - development update

In Autumn 2010, Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Education, asked Professor Alison Wolf to carry out a review of vocational education for 14-19 year olds. Since receiving her report, the Department for Education (DfE) has made decisions about the future of vocational qualifications for 14-16 year olds and their inclusion in school performance tables. 'In line with Professor Wolf's recommendations, in future, only qualifications which are high quality, rigorous and enable progression to a range of study and employment opportunities will be recognised in school performance tables for 14-16 year olds'.
