Tell us a bit about you

I originally hail from Wales, and proudly support them in rugby and football (when they win). I have lived in Newcastle almost all of my life and I am married with two sons. Outside of work, nearly all of my time is spent helping to run a junior football club in the local community for around 450 children, as well as coaching two football teams. If I get any spare time, it's mainly spent at the gym, watching my sons play sports or since lockdown, enjoying a newfound love of walking.

Tell us a bit about your career

When I left school, I aspired to have a career playing football, signing an old style YTS at Hartlepool United. Injury curtailed that dream, but at that point it allowed me to really consider what I wanted to do next. I got my first 'proper job' at Northern Rock, and soon realised that I had a passion for IT and learning, so embarked on a self-study scheme through Learn Direct to gain an industry-recognised technical certificate with Microsoft (MCSE). That led me to other technical roles at Sage, BT and NCG, and I've continued to see education and ambition as a mechanism for improving myself whilst quenching my thirst to learn new things – my latest addition being a master's degree in cyber security, supported by NCFE. I've also enjoyed some sabbatical time during my career, living and working in Australia.

Why NCFE?

I joined NCFE in 2013, working in the IT Infrastructure team, and was immediately tasked with moving the company to new offices – seamlessly. Thankfully, it went successfully, and I have continued to be supported to push and develop myself throughout my time here. The impact I feel through the accomplishment of learning, and then being able to replicate that to learners, to feel that same way, is what keeps me motivated each day here at NCFE.
