I’d like to open by thanking you for feeding into our recent research on end-point assessment (EPA) for apprenticeships. This has given us great insight into your thoughts, concerns and challenges around the delivery and assessment of apprenticeship standards.

Unsurprisingly, chief amongst the findings was that virtually all providers responded that they expect qualifications to be part of the EPA for at least some of the apprenticeships that they deliver. This is a point we have raised several times in the past, as qualifications provide evidence and portability of learning across sectors and job roles.

Alongside this, it’s interesting to see that the types of learning, development and assessment materials most in demand are ‘supporting learning materials’ and ‘qualifications and assessment guides’. Again, these are the services that can be offered by the awarding sector, in support of the overall apprenticeship delivery package. Additionally, as the delivery of apprenticeship standards matures, this level of support will become common across most standards.

It’s heartening to see that, in light of the apprenticeship reforms, the sector is still focused on quality and flexible assessments and delivery to meet the needs of the apprentice. If we are going to provide apprentices fit for the workplace, we’ll need to ensure that this quality is embedded throughout all aspects of their programme, and that they can be assessed flexibly, on demand and with short notice. We look forward to working with you and the sector to take these apprentices to the next level.
