In September, Stakeholder and Partnership Development Manager at NCFE, Warren Cresswell, started volunteering at his local primary school, Little Heath Primary School in Hertfordshire, as part of NCFE’s Community Time Bank. The Community Time Bank is a scheme encouraging staff to take up to 12 hours per year to make a positive difference in their community by contributing to community or charity projects.

With CACHE learners making up a large proportion of nursery staff and teaching assistants, Warren felt that contributing at his local school would be a perfect way to spend his volunteering time, and has since enjoyed working with pupils to help them gain confidence in using home learning programmes designed to support progress in maths and reading.

Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO) at Little Heath, Anne Nixon, has become increasingly aware of the impact made by volunteers at the school, where working in partnership with parents is at the centre of everyday practice, and provides invaluable opportunities to exchange knowledge and ideas.

Praising Warren’s contribution, Anne commented:

“The children particularly enjoy having ‘a dad’ in school and Mr Cresswell is very good at nurturing positive relationships with our children and staff.  He is putting his intelligence, efficiency and parental viewpoint to good use in helping us to maximize the impact of home learning programmes”.

With Warren’s team at NCFE awaiting contact for their first ‘befriending’ sessions at a residential care home as part of the Community Time Bank, he hopes to encourage even more colleagues to give back and make a difference in their community by sharing his experience:

“I’m really enjoying helping pupils improve and would definitely encourage others to do the same”.
