My apprenticeship journey – celebrating #NAW2020 with YourCode Group

All this week (3-7 February), NCFE is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week. To mark the occasion, we reached out to some of our friends in the business community to find out about their own apprenticeship experiences.

Luke Ambler is an apprentice working as part of the Business Development function at The YourCode Group, a specialist recruitment firm based in Wakefield. Less than 18 months after joining the company, Luke has been promoted and is now working his way towards a managerial role through his apprenticeship. Read Luke’s story:

“Having completed school with good GCSE grades, I decided to go straight into employment by taking a role in Customer Service with an international business. Very quickly however, it became apparent that this wasn’t for me and I decided to look for an apprenticeship.

“I joined The YourCode Group in September 2018, undertaking a Level 3 Team Leadership apprenticeship course which the owners of the business had also completed just three years prior. The course is designed to help support my growth and development into a management role in the next 12 months.

“I complete my studies from my workplace, with my assessor coming onsite to help me develop my skills whilst observing my duties. The apprenticeship gives me time to develop my skills in a practical manner, whilst taking up a central role within a fast growing business.

“Since starting my apprenticeship, I have been given access to many areas that I would never typically get to experience within a business, aiding my progression and development to become a trusted member of the team.

“Within less than 18 months of starting my employment at YourCode, I have already received a promotion and have seen a significant improvement in my professional working skills. I absolutely love my job and being a part of such a fast growing and exciting business.”

Josh Dixon, Founder and Managing Director at The YourCode Group, commented:

“After completing a very similar course myself just a few years ago, I decided that the apprenticeship route would be an excellent option for Luke. We are very proud of our apprentices and developing the talent in our business, and Luke is a prime example of this.

“Having joined the business with zero experience within the industry, in just 18 months he is one of the most trusted team members and has outperformed a number of experienced professionals within their roles. Apprenticeships have been key to our business growth and will continue to be a focal point as we seek international expansion.”

NCFE offers a wide range of accredited apprenticeship standards to help learners and employees to take their next steps on the career ladder. We are also an approved End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) so we can support learners on their apprenticeship journey from start to finish.
