CACHE Health and healthcare science

Specialist recognition

We’ve been delivering qualifications for over 175 years to more than 1,000 UK and overseas partners in the health and healthcare science sector, and we’re committed to developing qualifications that fill skills gaps, train exceptional practitioners, and ensure no learner who wants to pursue a career in this field is left behind.

Our qualifications cover Levels 1–5, end-point assessment (EPA) of apprenticeship standards and continuing professional development (CPD) courses. These all offer entry and progression into the health and healthcare science sectors.

We were also awarded the contract by the Government to develop the technical qualifications that underpin T Levels in Health and Healthcare Science. These qualifications signify a revolution in technical education and have become one of the main learning routes for those aged 16–18.

Opportunities in health and healthcare science

Doctors, nurses and midwives represent a third of NHS staff. This highlights its multi-disciplinary nature, and how it depends on others like healthcare scientists, ambulance workers, healthcare support workers, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

The Health Foundation, The King’s Fund and Nuffield Trust report of staff shortages that could rise to 100,000 by 2030. Nursing and midwifery have the highest number of vacancies at over 35,000.

There are over 50,000 healthcare scientists working in the NHS and public sector services. Healthcare scientists work in more than 50 specialisms, which can be categorised into 4 groups; laboratory sciences, physiological sciences, medical physics and clinical engineering and bioinformatics.

With so many opportunities across the sector, it’s now more important than ever for learners to pursue careers in health and healthcare science, and for current practitioners to continue to upskill and progress.
