Sector insights

Science is a major sector within the UK economy and is vital to addressing challenges we face in the future, such as achieving net zero and energy security. Currently, the UK is facing a large skills shortage within STEM industries (science, technology, engineering and maths). More than 40% of these vacancies are “hard to fill” due to a shortage of applicants with the required skills, highlighting the need for more technical education within the sector.

NCFE was awarded the contract by the Government to develop the technical qualification which underpins the T Level in Science. This new qualification signifies a revolution in technical education and will become one of the main learning routes for those aged 16–18. We’re also supporting the sector in addressing skills gaps, as well as progression routes for those working within industry.
