About this qualification
This qualification is designed for learners who wish to understand children's mental health in the early years (from birth to 5 years old) and learn about the role of the Early Years Practitioner in supporting children’s mental health and wellbeing. This is a knowledge- and skills-based qualification. Through achieving this qualification, learners will develop knowledge which would support progression to further qualifications and into relevant employment in the health and social care or education sectors.
The qualification builds on the outcomes within the Early Years Practitioner occupational standard (ST0888).
Who is it suitable for?
This qualification is designed for learners who wish to understand mental health in young children in the early years.
It may also be useful to learners studying qualifications in the following sectors/areas:
- mental health
- early years
- childminding
- support roles
What are the entry requirements?
Learners may find it helpful if they have already achieved a level 1 qualification.
Learners should be at least 16 years old. We do not set any other entry requirements but colleges and training providers may have their own guidelines.

This qualification consists of three mandatory units.

This qualification is internally assessed and externally quality assured via a portfolio of evidence.
How long will it take to complete this qualification?
This qualification can be completed in under one year.

The learner must be working, volunteering or on practical placement in an appropriate setting to be able to meet the assessment requirements of this qualification.
