Graphicdesign makes for an exciting career path for your creative, tech-savvy pupils. Our Level 1/2 Technical Award in Graphic Design teaches pupils practical graphic design skills to help build their confidence and experience in working to design briefs, allowing them to produce their own portfolios

V Cert Technical Awards are designed to be delivered over two years. The first year of delivery is entirely dedicated to teaching and learning, with all summative assessments taking place in the final year of study. The Graphic Design V Cert Technical Award is assessed by Non-Exam Assessment (60%) and Examined Assessment (40%).

→ Approved for KS4 Performance Tables in 2025, 2026 and 2027.

→ Combined Level 1 and Level 2 to recognise the achievements of all learners.

→ The same size and delivery time as a GCSE.

→ Created in collaboration with employers to deliver the skills industries need.

→ Pupils don’t need any specific skills or knowledge prior to study.

→ Graded at Level 1 Pass, Merit, Distinction and Level 2 Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction*, equivalent to GCSE grades 8.5−1.

Who this qualification is for 

This qualification is designed for pupils who are creative, enjoy visual communication and want to explore how graphic design influences the world around us. It offers a hands-on, practical introduction to the field, helping learners develop key skills in planning, designing, and producing graphic design work across a variety of formats. Through project-based learning, students will explore core components of graphic design, investigate the work of industry professionals and learn how to respond to creative briefs. The course also encourages experimentation and the development of personal style, as learners refine their ideas through planning, production, and presentation. It helps build a strong foundation in both practical techniques and the creative thinking needed to succeed in this dynamic field.

→ Further study: a T Level in Craft and Design, A Level in Graphic Design or an Applied General in Art and Design at college or sixth form.


Apprenticeship: as an artworker, animator or illustrator.
