Why is this course important?
Many things can cause children and young people to feel overwhelmed, from difficult experiences to neurodivergence.
Distress might present as anger, anxiety, or withdrawal from those around them. In turn, this may lead to behaviours that harm both others and the young person themselves.
While responding to these situations in the wrong ways can make things even worse, staying calm and supportive helps you find a safe and constructive way forward.
This course gives you a step-by-step approach to providing compassionate care that validates young people’s experiences and helps them regain a sense of control. When children feel they can trust those around them, they’re better able to regulate their emotions, engage with support services, and take advantage of opportunities to learn, play, and explore.
31% of children in the UK have had a traumatic experience by the age of 18*, while around 1 in 7 are neurodivergent. Teachers have also reported a significant increase in social and emotional issues since disruptions to schooling during the COVID-19 pandemic. All of this means education and early years practitioners face a complex range of needs and behaviours every day.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

You’ll learn how to:
- understand causes of emotional distress in young people
- calm and reassure children who are feeling overwhelmed
- handle challenging behaviours with confidence
- find appropriate resolutions
- know the boundaries of your role and when to ask for help.
This learning will help you achieve the best outcomes for distressed children and young people, create calmer learning environments, and take care of your own wellbeing at the same time.
Complete the course at a time and pace that suits you, developing your skills through an education-based scenario, expert video insights, reflective activities, and a short assessment. You’ll receive a downloadable toolkit to guide you through future challenges, as well as a digital badge that recognises your professional development.
