Apprenticeship Assessment Standard
The role of a personal trainer is to support and coach clients, both on a one-to-one basis and in small groups, to help them achieve their health and fitness goals. Through the design and delivery of creative, personalised exercise programmes, nutritional advice, and lifestyle management support, personal trainers help clients improve their overall wellbeing. They motivate clients to make positive and lasting changes to their behaviour by providing specialist, tailored advice within their scope of practice.
Personal trainers must also recognise when a client requires specialist support and refer them to an appropriate professional, such as a physiotherapist, registered dietitian, or medical specialist. A comprehensive understanding of business, finance, sales and marketing is also essential to enable the personal trainer to build and retain a stable client base. Personal trainers play an important role in improving the health of the nation, creating opportunities that get more people, more active, more often. They are typically employed by a fitness or leisure centre or, once qualified, can be self-employed.

Frequently Asked Questions
NCFE's assessment approach for the reformed Personal Trainer apprenticeship consists of:
- Assessment 1: Observation with Question and Answer (Q&A)
- Assessment 2: Portfolio with Question and Answer (Q&A)
This approach enables apprentices to demonstrate both their practical coaching capability and their broader occupational competence as a personal trainer.
NCFE offers flexible delivery options to support providers and employers.
Under the NCFE Assessed model, NCFE delivers and assesses all assessment activities.
Under the NCFE Combined model, approved providers may deliver the Observation and Q&A assessment activity in line with NCFE requirements, with quality assurance arrangements in place to ensure consistency and validity of outcomes.
The Portfolio and Q&A is assessed by NCFE.
The assessment approach has been designed in line with the principles of apprenticeship assessment reform and informed by feedback from providers and employers.
The Observation and Q&A allows apprentices to demonstrate the practical coaching, communication and client engagement skills required in the role. The Portfolio and Q&A provides evidence of competence across the wider responsibilities of a personal trainer, including programme design, client management and professional practice.
Together, these methods support a holistic assessment of occupational competence.
Personal trainers spend their time working directly with clients to support health, fitness and behaviour change goals through personalised coaching and exercise programmes. The assessment approach has therefore been designed around authentic occupational activities, enabling apprentices to demonstrate competence in a realistic coaching environment.
Our assessment approach reflects the aims of apprenticeship assessment reform by supporting more proportionate, holistic and occupationally relevant assessment.
The methods have been designed to reduce unnecessary assessment burden while ensuring apprentices can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for successful performance in the role.
Quality and consistency are maintained through NCFE's assessment, quality assurance and standardisation processes.
All assessment decisions are subject to NCFE requirements and oversight, helping to ensure a consistent assessment experience and reliable outcomes for apprentices, employers and providers.
Providers will have access to a range of support and guidance throughout delivery, including:
- onboarding and approval support
- implementation guidance
- assessment walkthrough resources
- webinars and events
- dedicated relationship management
- operational support throughout delivery
Our aim is to help providers feel confident throughout the apprenticeship lifecycle, from implementation through to certification.
NCFE's assessment approach has been developed in collaboration with employers and providers and is aligned to the principles of apprenticeship assessment reform.
We combine sector expertise, flexible delivery models, robust quality assurance and dedicated support to help providers deliver high-quality apprenticeship programmes.
For Personal Trainer, our assessment approach focuses on the skills that matter most in practice, enabling apprentices to demonstrate competence through authentic client-focused activities that reflect the role.
