Designed to recognise learners who demonstrate exceptional achievement, progress and ambition within their vocational studies, this commendation celebrates individuals who go beyond expectations and positively influence those around them. Ela Burton is highly commended for her outstanding development and academic excellence.
The challenge
16-year-old Ela Burton began her Level 1/2 Technical Award (V Cert) in Child Development and Care at The Academy Grimsby with quiet determination, approaching her studies with focus and a strong desire to succeed. Over time, she has shown remarkable personal growth, developing into a confident learner.
Her journey reflects a consistent commitment to improvement, as she has actively sought feedback and continually pushed herself to achieve more.
The journey
Ela consistently produces outstanding work, demonstrating advanced research skills, critical analysis and a strong ability to apply theory to real-world contexts. Her academic approach goes beyond expectations, reflecting both her dedication and intellectual curiosity.
She has embraced challenges as opportunities, using constructive feedback as a steppingstone for improvement and consistently demonstrating resilience when faced with complex or demanding tasks.
The impact
Alongside her own success, Ela has made a positive impact on those around her. She is a natural mentor, supporting her peers, raising standards within the group and contributing thoughtful feedback to strengthen the qualification experience.
Ela has contributed valuable feedback on the qualification itself. She has engaged thoughtfully in course discussions, providing constructive suggestions that have helped inform improvements to teaching delivery and assessment approaches. Her insights have been balanced, reflective, and solution-focused, demonstrating not only engagement but also a genuine desire to enhance the experience for future learners.
Ela's nominator Taylor-Amy Burgess, a Health and Care Teacher at The Academy Grimsby, adds: "I am incredibly proud of Ela. She has been an absolute pleasure to teach and is truly deserving of this national award and everything it represents.
"Receiving this award has not only boosted Ela’s confidence but is also a huge recognition for all her hard work and dedication! Ela is a fantastic role model, and this achievement is a reflection of her commitment and perseverance. "
Looking to the future
Ela has actively sought opportunities to develop beyond the core curriculum. Though only 16, Ela is already looking into her future and setting the path for success, contacting medical schools and not only setting her goals for the future but proactively setting the plan to reach them.
Undertaking the task of developing her own research using ‘adeno-associated virus as a delivery for CRISPR gene editing to find a cure for BRCA caused cancers’ and presenting this to a board of professions. This showed great determination to broaden her knowledge and expertise.
Her professionalism and ambition, combined with her commitment to helping others succeed, set her apart as an exceptional learner. Ela’s contribution and achievement make her a highly commended recipient.
Speaking on her achievement, Ela said: "Receiving this award means so much more than recognising my academic achievements. It reflects the hard work, resilience, and confidence I have developed, as well as the support I have received along the way.
"At 14, I decided I wanted to become a doctor, and since then I have worked hard to achieve my goals. A special thank you to Taylor for her guidance, encouragement, and belief in me throughout my NCFE courses. I hope my journey shows other young people that with determination, support, and self-belief, anything is possible."
