Aspiration Awards 2026: Learner of the Year winner – Nonge Bikishoni

Designed to recognise learners who demonstrate exceptional growth, commitment and impact, the Learner of the Year award celebrates individuals whose journeys inspire others. This year’s winner is Nonge Bikishoni, whose remarkable resilience and determination have led to a truly transformative return to education.

The challenge

Nonge Bikishoni’s journey into education has been shaped by significant personal challenges. After years of struggling with undiagnosed ADHD, multiple mental health challenges and a lack of clear direction, he made the decision to return to learning with a renewed sense of purpose.

Enrolling on the NCFE Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges at Bournemouth & Poole College, Nonge approached this new chapter with determination and a strong desire to make a difference, setting the foundation for the remarkable progress that followed.

A transformative journey

Nonge quickly established himself as an outstanding learner, being supportive, reflective and academically strong. He became a positive influence on his peers, contributing to an encouraging learning environment.

A defining moment in his journey was his voluntary placement in a primary school, described as “lifechanging.” Here, he excelled in both classroom support and specialist SEND provision, demonstrating a natural talent, empathy and professionalism in his work.

His experience in placement not only strengthened his skills but also confirmed his passion for working in education and supporting others to thrive.

The impact

Nonge’s commitment and progress have already resulted in new opportunities, including achieving an NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching & Learning and being offered a teaching assistant role. He now plans to progress to Level 3 and ultimately qualify as a teacher, continuing to build on his achievements.

His nominator, Sara Brown, Lecturer and Senior Assessor Bournemouth & Poole College, said: "Nonge is a well deserving winner of the Learner of the Year; we are thrilled and proud of his success in the NCFE Aspiration Awards. As a college we are passionate about unlocking the potential of every student. Nonge is a brilliant example of how we can improve lives through education and empower students to succeed now and in the future.”

Speaking on his win, Nonge added: "I was apprehensive about coming back into education because of my experiences at school. I enrolled on the Level 2 Support Work in Schools and Colleges and quite quickly, settled into it. My tutor and peers were so nice and helpful.

"The Award course helped give me a different view on education and encouraged me to start volunteering at a primary school and continue my studies with the Certificate course."

His journey is a powerful example of resilience, growth and purpose. Through his determination to overcome personal challenges and his positive impact on those around him, Nonge embodies the true spirit of Learner of the Year.
