How NCFE’s Social Impact Fund is helping more children take part in sports

Each quarter, NCFE colleagues can make a real difference in their communities by applying for the Social Impact Fund to support a cause that is important to them. The latest cause to receive funding was the Access to Sports project at Lime Academy Watergall Primary School.  

The school is based in the diverse and vibrant community of Bretton, where many families experience socio-economic disadvantages that can make it difficult for children to access opportunities outside of the classroom. Even when the sporting activities themselves are free, kit and transportation costs can make participation impossible for some pupils. 

The funding application came from a colleague who had seen these challenges first-hand through their connection to the school. They wanted to help remove some of the participation barriers so more children could experience the confidence, friendships and sense of achievement that sport can bring. 

Breaking down barriers through sports 

The school places a strong emphasis on extracurricular opportunities, recognising the benefits of taking part in sporting activities. Their Access to Sports Project enables pupils to take part in local football competitions throughout the academic year, including league matches, tournaments, and activities dedicated specifically to children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). 

The project received £500 in funding from NCFE’s Social Impact Fund, helping to cover transport, entry costs, and appropriate kit. This has made it possible for more than 50 pupils to take part in football activities that they might otherwise have missed.  

Impact on the community 

The school has already seen the wider benefits of the project. After funding allowed them to enter the local mixed football league, the team ultimately went on to win it. As a result of this, they were invited to attend the finals play off at Peterborough United's stadium. Children had the chance to build their self-esteem while meeting pupils from other schools and representing their team with pride. 

Reflecting on the funding, the school's Headteacher Andy Buffham said: "At Watergall, we believe every child deserves the chance to feel part of something bigger. By funding transport and access to local football tournaments, we have removed barriers that previously prevented some of our pupils from attending.  

"These experiences have strengthened their confidence, relationships and sense of belonging, both within our school and across the wider Peterborough community."
