Apprenticeship Assessment Standard

Sports Coach

In their day-to-day role, sports coaches engage with and
influence a wide range of stakeholders, including assistant coaches, fellow coaches, managers, sponsors, governing boards, and broader industry support networks. They achieve this through the development and application of their coaching philosophy and professional practice, ensuring alignment with organisational vision, strategy, policies, and procedures. Through their work, coaches may also contribute to and influence the standards and direction of professional and governing bodies within the sport.

Sports coaches evaluate the effectiveness of their coaching approaches by analysing participant, coach, coaching team, and organisational performance and perception data. This information is then compared against relevant local, national, and international benchmarks and trends to inform continuous improvement and ensure coaching practices remain effective and relevant. Working both independently and collaboratively, sports coaches design and deliver progressive coaching programmes that align with wider curriculum and development plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

NCFE's assessment approach for the reformed Sports Coach apprenticeship consists of:

  • Assessment 1: Observation with Question and Answer (Q&A)
  • Assessment 2: Professional Discussion

This approach enables apprentices to demonstrate both their practical coaching capability and their wider occupational competence as a sports coach

NCFE offers flexible delivery options to support providers and employers.

Under the NCFE Assessed model, NCFE delivers and assesses all assessment activities.

Under the NCFE Combined model, approved providers may deliver the Observation and Q&A assessment activity in line with NCFE requirements, with quality assurance arrangements in place to ensure consistency and validity of outcomes.

The Professional Discussion is assessed by NCFE.

The assessment approach has been developed in line with the principles of apprenticeship assessment reform and shaped by feedback from employers and providers.

The Observation and Q&A enables apprentices to demonstrate how they plan, adapt and deliver coaching in a real coaching environment. The Professional Discussion allows apprentices to explore the thinking behind their coaching decisions and demonstrate competence across areas that may not naturally arise during a single observed session.

Together, these methods support a holistic assessment of occupational competence.

Sports coaches are responsible for designing and delivering coaching programmes that engage, motivate and develop participants across a range of coaching environments. The assessment approach has therefore been designed around authentic coaching activities, enabling apprentices to demonstrate competence in realistic coaching situations.

Yes. The assessment approach is designed to support apprentices working across the pathways within the apprenticeship, including community, school and high-performance coaching settings, while maintaining consistency and quality of assessment outcomes.

Our assessment approach reflects the aims of apprenticeship assessment reform by supporting more proportionate, holistic and occupationally relevant assessment.

The methods have been designed to reduce unnecessary assessment burden while ensuring apprentices can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for successful performance as a sports coach.

Providers will have access to a range of support and guidance throughout delivery, including:

  • onboarding and approval support
  • implementation guidance
  • assessment walkthrough resources
  • webinars and events
  • dedicated relationship management
  • operational support throughout delivery

Our aim is to help providers feel confident throughout the apprenticeship lifecycle, from implementation through to certification.

NCFE's assessment approach has been developed in collaboration with employers and providers and is aligned to the principles of apprenticeship assessment reform.

We combine sector expertise, flexible delivery models, robust quality assurance and dedicated support to help providers deliver high-quality apprenticeship programmes.

For Sports Coach, our assessment approach focuses on authentic coaching practice, enabling apprentices to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and professional judgement required to coach effectively across a range of sporting environments.
