Apprenticeship Assessment Standard
The community activator coach promotes, delivers and coaches fun, inclusive and engaging activities that help whole communities to change their behaviour, adopt and keep to a physically active lifestyle. Community activator coaches are more than activity and sports leaders, they will also understand communities and customers. They will be equipped with the specialist knowledge needed to effectively work with one customer group (such as inactive teenagers) but also be knowledgeable about other inactive customer groups whom they may be expected to work with on occasions.
Community activator coaches are predominantly employed by sport for social change charities, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who operate in the sport and physical activity sector, local authorities, sports clubs, leisure centres, youth work agencies, housing associations, and outdoor education centres and are deployed to primarily work with inactive groups of people. The community activator coach will be a positive role model who builds good rapport with customers, especially those who are young, inactive or from low income and marginalised communities. The community activator coach often works alongside youth workers, the police and community safety agencies to make neighbourhoods safer and works alongside health workers to make residents fitter and healthier.

Frequently Asked Questions
NCFE's assessment approach for the reformed Community Activator Coach apprenticeship consists of a single:
- Observation with Question and Answer (Q&A)
This assessment enables apprentices to demonstrate occupational competence through practical delivery in a real community sport and physical activity environment.
Our assessment approach has been developed in line with the principles of apprenticeship assessment reform and informed by feedback from employers and providers.
The single Observation with Q&A provides a streamlined assessment experience while allowing apprentices to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and behaviours in an integrated and occupationally relevant way.
This approach helps reduce assessment burden without compromising the validity of assessment outcomes.
NCFE has deliberately chosen a fully NCFE-assessed model for this apprenticeship.
As a Level 2 apprenticeship, we wanted to create the simplest possible assessment experience for apprentices, employers and providers. By delivering and assessing the observation directly, NCFE can provide a consistent assessment approach while reducing administrative requirements for providers.
Community Activator Coaches promote participation in sport and physical activity, engage diverse communities and deliver inclusive activity sessions that support health and wellbeing. The assessment has therefore been designed around authentic workplace activities, enabling apprentices to demonstrate competence in a realistic setting.
Our assessment approach reflects the aims of apprenticeship assessment reform by supporting more proportionate, holistic and occupationally relevant assessment.
Using a single assessment method reduces unnecessary duplication, lowers assessment burden and helps create a more accessible assessment experience for Level 2 learners while maintaining robust assessment of occupational competence.
Providers will have access to a range of support and guidance throughout delivery, including:
- onboarding and approval support
- implementation guidance
- assessment walkthrough resources
- webinars and events
- dedicated relationship management
- operational support throughout delivery
Our aim is to help providers feel confident throughout the apprenticeship lifecycle, from implementation through to certification.
NCFE's assessment approach has been developed in collaboration with employers and providers and is aligned to the principles of apprenticeship assessment reform.
For Community Activator Coach, we have deliberately designed a simple, streamlined assessment model consisting of a single NCFE-delivered assessment. This helps reduce assessment burden, minimise provider administration, support a positive experience for Level 2 learners and keep delivery costs manageable, while maintaining the quality and rigour expected of apprenticeship assessment.
