Aspiration Awards 2026: Learner of the Year highly commended – Orla Geeson

Designed to recognise adult learners who demonstrate exceptional commitment, progress and impact, the Learner of the Year award celebrates individuals who overcome challenges and inspire those around them. Orla Geeson is highly commended for her journey back into education has led to remarkable growth and achievement.

The challenge

Orla Geeson joined The Hub Educational Services CIC after two years out of education, facing significant barriers to learning and engagement. Diagnosed with ADHD and Autism, she experienced severe anxiety, low confidence and limited social interaction.

Despite these challenges, Orla took the courageous step of returning to education, determined to build a positive future for herself. Through her commitment, she began to overcome the obstacles that had previously held her back.

The journey

Since enrolling, Orla has shown extraordinary progress both academically and personally. She achieved over 80% in her Level 1 maths qualification and is now continuing her studies at Level 2 English, demonstrating strong commitment to her development.

Beyond her academic success, Orla has grown in confidence and discovered new passions. She has developed a love of art, become a confident public speaker, including advocating to her local MP, and contributed to her community by volunteering at the Summer Holiday Club.

Her willingness to support others is equally inspiring. After learning British Sign Language, she now supports a deaf peer, showing leadership and a strong sense of community. Alongside this, she has built work experience and joined amateur dramatics, further strengthening her confidence and skills.

A truly deserving winner

Orla is now actively pursuing her aspiration to become a theatrical makeup artist, building on her creative interests and growing self-belief. Her journey reflects a powerful transformation, going from a place of uncertainty and anxiety to one of confidence, purpose and ambition.

Vanessa Brooks, Director of The Hub Educational Services, said: "Orla's journey has been truly inspiring. She has shown remarkable courage, commitment and growth, and this highly commended is a testament to everything she has achieved. We are immensely proud of the young person she has become and excited to see what the future holds for her. Congratulations, Orla – this recognition is thoroughly deserved."

Orla wished to share her gratitude towards The Hub Educational Services, adding: "I couldn't have done it without you guys at the Hub."
