Designed to recognise learners who have overcome difficult personal circumstances to succeed in their studies, the Against All Odds award is very special and always attracts a huge volume of nominations. This year’s winner is Lucas McElroy, whose determination, resilience and exceptional work ethic have enabled him to thrive both in the classroom and beyond, despite significant health challenges.
Unwavering determination
Lucas is an exceptional learner on the Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health and Fitness, demonstrating consistent commitment across both theory and practical elements, and is on track to achieve excellent results.
Born with Spina Bifida and congenital hydrocephalus, Lucas lives with complex medical needs, including partial paralysis of his lower limbs, and loss of skin sensation. These challenges affect multiple areas of his development, including physical ability, learning, and independence. Over the years, he has undergone numerous surgeries, most recently to remove part of his spine.
Lucas said: “I’m proud of what I’ve gone through to get to this stage. I know I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am. At the start of the year, I was missing a lot of school time due to medical stuff, so I was originally falling behind. The challenges just make me have to work harder, so I can catch up on anything that I’ve missed out on.”
Despite these significant barriers, Lucas approaches his studies with unwavering determination. His resilience is evident not only in his academic progress, but also in the way he continues to engage fully in all aspects of school life, earning the respect of his teachers, peers, and the wider school community.
Focus and determination
Lucas’ passion for wheelchair racing is a powerful reflection of his drive to succeed. Training for many years at the Weir Archer Centre under the guidance of David Weir and Jenny Archer, he has competed in British Wheelchair Association races at Stoke Mandeville and represented Team England at the School Games. He has also attended a training camp in Switzerland, competed in the London Mini Marathon wheelchair race, and taken part in numerous 5km charity events.
Lucas added: “You definitely have to be quite determined to overcome certain things. I also do wheelchair racing, so anything that’s fitness or training related, that’s always something that’s on my mind as a motivator. Ideally, I would like to be in the Paralympics one day. If I’m able to make it far as a professional athlete, then that would be amazing.”
In his health and fitness course, Lucas demonstrates remarkable athleticism, often surprising others with his performance, including completing 65 press-ups in one minute. He has also shown initiative by researching alternative fitness tests, such as the Alternate Hand Wall Toss Test and the Slalom Run, ensuring he can showcase his abilities without disadvantage. This adaptability highlights both his practical intelligence and determination.
Colleen Whitear, Head of Health and Fitness and Blenheim High School, said: “During the health and fitness course, Lucas has been an exceptional learner, throughout theory and practical lessons. Since Year 9, progressing through to Year 10 and 11, there has been such progress. He uses his growth mindset to apply a can-do attitude to his work and has gone above and beyond to complete everything, including his NEA and exam revision to the best of his ability.
“Lucas has adapted to any of the changes and challenges, such as, on a big school site like ours, being able to navigate around with ramps and lifts, changing classrooms, as well as off-site gym sessions. Throughout his learning, Lucas’s confidence in his own ability has grown and he is often completing tough, tougher, and toughest challenges in theory and practical lessons, so that he’s got steppingstones to be able to keep learning, recall, and be able to make sustained progress.”
Following his most recent surgery, Lucas faced a period of recovery that temporarily limited his training and learning in school. However, once he was able to return, he worked with focus and determination in gym sessions, applying progressive overload techniques to rebuild his strength, endurance, and coordination.
Supported by his teachers and peers, who assist him during exercises, he continues to push himself to improve, in addition to attending additional catch-up and extended day sessions as well as revision sessions. Applying his growth mind set and achieving marginal gains has contributed to Lucas’s success.
Striving to improve
Lucas’ commitment extends far beyond timetabled lessons. He arrives early at school to undertake physiotherapy sessions before beginning a full day of learning and has attended after-school sessions for the past six months to catch up on missed work while recovering from surgery.
His progress on the course has been significant, with notable improvements in tests and assessments. Despite facing some learning and memory challenges following head surgery, Lucas remains resolute, consistently striving to improve and refusing to let any barrier stand in his way.
As his nominator, Colleen Whitear, explains: "Lucas is always determined to succeed and will always say yes to being able to do anything. We adapt around that – whether it’s moving in and out of his chair to be able to use certain pieces of equipment or being able to adjust what he’s learning to suit his disability.
“Lucas deserves to win the Against All Odds award because he is absolutely outstanding and he doesn’t know how brilliant he is; he really is quite modest. He has shown unwavering resilience, determination and has succeeded at pushing through the challenging times despite history of medical illnesses and associated learning needs. His positivity and growth mindset has shown that he can achieve whatever he sets his mind to in the future and I wish him every success.”
Lucas’ determination to succeed, both academically and personally, makes him a truly deserving winner. His story is an inspiration, demonstrating the power of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering focus in the face of adversity.
