A revolution in technical education

T Levels

EPA Health Two Women Working In Healthcare Setting

It was announced on 30 January that the Hairdressing, Barbering and Beauty Therapy T Level will be reshaped as a T Level focused on the beauty sector, and launched after 2025.

We understand this decision has been based on extensive engagement by the Department for Education (DfE) with hairdressing and beauty employers as well as sector representatives.

We’ll work closely with the DfE and the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) to better understand the structure of, and arrangements for, the new T Level and we’ll communicate with you as soon as we can.

We understand that this decision will be challenging for those providers who have already taken steps to prepare for the Hairdressing, Barbering and Beauty Therapy T Level rollout. We’re here to support you and signpost you to the best resources from the DfE and skills partners, to support post-16 destination choices.

IfATE has reiterated that T Levels remain government’s flagship technical qualification for 16-19 year olds, with tens of thousands of students studying or having studied T Levels, and they will form the backbone of the Advanced British Standard.

T Levels are a high-quality, work-focused alternative to A Levels for those aged 16 – 18. These two-year courses are designed with employers to intimately reflect the needs of the sectors and occupations they’re designed to serve.

After completing their two-year T Level, students will have the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviours to successfully progress into work or higher-level study.

Innovative qualifications

We use deep insight into what employers need to design qualifications for a future highly skilled, adaptive workforce. Our T Levels come under three main subject areas:

Key points you need to know about T Levels:
  • Courses last two years
  • 1 T Level is equivalent to three A Levels
  • Created in collaboration with employers
  • Include a substantial industry placement
  • Attract UCAS points
  • Support progression into skilled work and higher or degree level apprenticeships, higher level technical study, including university.
