Against All Odds

Winner: Lucas McElroy, Blenheim High School

Lucas McElroy has shown exceptional determination and resilience while studying the Level 1/2 Technical Award in health and fitness. Living with spina bifida and congenital hydrocephalus, he balances complex medical needs and recovery from multiple surgeries with his studies, working hard to catch up on missed learning.

Alongside this, Lucas is a committed wheelchair racer, training and competing at national level with ambitions to reach the Paralympics. With the support of his teachers and peers, and a strong growth mindset, Lucas continues to overcome barriers, making him a truly deserving Against All Odds winner.

Winner (adult): Ursula Cullen, South West College

Ursula Cullen has displayed remarkable resilience and determination in returning to education after nearly 30 years. Studying the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in supporting teaching and learning, she has balanced her studies with significant personal challenges while building confidence and new skills.

She has made outstanding progress, developing her digital abilities, producing high-quality work and supporting her peers. Her success in placement has led to employment, reflecting her professionalism and commitment to a new career in education. “Her strength and dedication make her an inspiration to others,” says her tutor at South West College.

Highly commended: Paige Osmond, Warrington & Vale Royal College

Paige Osmond is highly commended for her exceptional resilience, determination, and personal growth while studying the Level 3 Extended Diploma in health and social care. Despite facing significant early challenges and growing up in care, she has remained focused on her education, achieving outstanding academic success and building a positive future.

Nominator and Class Lead & Tutor in Health Studies, Alexandra Joyce-Traynor, says: "Paige has transformed adversity into opportunity, becoming an inspiring role model within college and her wider community."

Apprentice of the Year

Winner: Jacob Naylor, Leeds City College

Jacob Naylor has demonstrated outstanding commitment, professionalism and growth as a Level 2 healthcare support worker apprentice at Leeds City College. Starting his journey at just 16, he quickly became a valued member of the team at York Hospital, showing compassion, maturity and a strong sense of responsibility in patient care.

Jacob consistently goes above and beyond, seeking learning opportunities and supporting colleagues in busy clinical settings. Despite managing dyslexia, he's worked hard to develop his skills and confidence, showing determination to succeed. With a passion for healthcare and clear ambition for the future, Jacob’s dedication and positive impact make him a worthy winner.

Highly commended (Active IQ): Paula Schrader, Exeter College

Paula Schrader is highly commended for her dedication, professionalism and drive during her Level 3 personal trainer apprenticeship at Exeter College. She consistently delivers confident, supportive coaching, helping people of all abilities build confidence and progress in their fitness journeys.

Excelling academically and completing additional qualifications, Paula has shown a strong commitment to continuous improvement. Her positive mindset and passion for helping others make a lasting impact. “Paula’s determination makes her a standout apprentice,” says her tutor.

Highly commended: Courtney Siddall, Bolton College

Courtney Siddall is highly commended for her exceptional resilience, progress and commitment during her Level 2 Early Years Practitioner apprenticeship at Bolton College. She has overcome personal challenges to build confidence, achieve her qualifications and secure full-time employment in early years education.

She has made a meaningful impact in the workplace, demonstrating empathy, professionalism and a natural ability to support young children’s development. Valued by colleagues and trusted by families, Courtney has grown into a reliable and compassionate practitioner.

Centre of the Year

Winner: Blackburn College, Early Years Department

Blackburn College has been named Centre of the Year for its outstanding early years provision, delivering an ambitious curriculum supported by expert staff, innovative teaching and strong employer partnerships. Learners benefit from high-quality placements and clear progression into employment, apprenticeships and higher education.

The centre has made a strong impact through its Malawi project, where learners contribute to global early years development while building confidence, skills and cultural awareness. This commitment to excellence and social responsibility sets the provision apart.

Highly commended (accreditation): LimeCulture Training

LimeCulture Training is highly commended for its outstanding impact and leadership in delivering trauma‑informed education for professionals supporting those affected by sexual violence and safeguarding issues. Highly commended (Active IQ): MIT Skills

MIT Skills is highly commended for its outstanding commitment to transforming young people’s lives through sport and education. Combining academic study with professional football training, the centre creates inclusive pathways that help learners build confidence, gain qualifications and progress into meaningful futures.

As Harry Reilly, Sports Tutor at the Strachan Football Foundation, explains: “MIT Skills has consistently demonstrated excellence in delivering high quality study programmes for learners aged 16–19, providing inclusive opportunities across a wide range of sporting abilities.”

Highly commended (International): Exeed College, UAE

Exeed College is highly commended for its impact on early years education across the GCC, delivering flexible, high-quality NCFE programmes for working professionals. Its inclusive approach enables learners to gain confidence, achieve qualifications and progress in their careers.

Educator of the Year

Winner: Andrew Johnson, Redcar & Cleveland College

Andrew Johnson has been named Educator of the Year for his outstanding commitment, passion, and impact on learners at Redcar and Cleveland College. He has made a lasting difference to his learners, going above and beyond to support their development both academically and personally.

Bethany Manning, the Course Lead in Health and Social Care at Redcar and Cleveland College, says: “What truly sets Andrew apart is his ability to combine innovation with compassion. He understands his learners as individuals, many of whom face personal, social, or educational barriers."

Highly commended: Jasmin Cooper, Swindon Borough Council

Jasmin Cooper is our highly commended Educator of the Year for her outstanding impact in adult maths education, helping learners overcome anxiety and rebuild confidence. Teaching Functional Skills and entry-level maths, she creates supportive, flexible learning environments where adults can succeed, often for the first time.

Through personalised support and accessible teaching, Jasmin empowers learners to achieve qualifications and progress into work. One learner shares, “Jasmin's determination to help me gave me confidence and helped me stay committed to my goals.”

Highly commended (Functional Skills): Lynn Baker, Lincoln College

Lynn Baker is highly commended for her exceptional impact in English education, helping learners overcome barriers and rebuild confidence. Teaching Functional Skills, she engages students who have struggled with literacy, using personalised approaches to make learning relevant, enjoyable and meaningful.

Her innovative teaching and strong learner relationships lead to outstanding progress, with many students exceeding expectations and gaining confidence in their abilities. Her dedication also extends to supporting colleagues and championing professional development. As one colleague shares, “Lynn has an undeniable ability to connect with even the most scared and defensive learners.”

Learner of the Year

Winner: Nonge Bikishoni, Bournemouth & Poole College

Nonge Bikishoni has been named Learner of the Year for his exceptional resilience, growth and commitment after returning to education with renewed purpose. Studying the NCFE Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges, he has overcome personal challenges to become a focused and inspiring learner.

He quickly made a positive impact, supporting peers and excelling in a primary school placement, where he demonstrated empathy, professionalism, and a natural ability to work in education. His progress and dedication have been truly outstanding.

Highly commended: Orla Geeson, The Hub Educational Services CIC

Orla Geeson is highly commended for her inspiring return to education, showing exceptional commitment and personal growth. After time out of learning and facing significant challenges, she has rebuilt her confidence, achieving strong academic results and progressing in her studies.

Beyond the classroom, Orla has discovered new passions, from art and public speaking to supporting others, including using British Sign Language to help a peer. Her confidence, determination, and willingness to give back reflect her remarkable journey.

Highly commended (adult): Amani Sobhi, CECOS College

Amani Sobhi is highly commended for her resilience, commitment and leadership after returning to education as a refugee and single mother. Despite significant challenges, she has made strong progress across multiple courses and is now working towards higher education.

As her nominator shares, “Amani freely offers her time, demonstrating compassion and empathy while helping others to succeed.”

Highly commended (V Cert): Ela Burton, The Academy Grimsby

Ela Burton is highly commended for her exceptional achievement and academic excellence in her Level 1/2 V Cert Technical Award in child development and care.

She has shown impressive growth, producing high-quality work and applying her learning with confidence and curiosity. Ela also supports her peers and contributes positively to her learning environment.

Highly commended (T Level): River Querelle, East Coast College

River Querelle is highly commended for her outstanding commitment and professionalism as a T Level health learner. From the outset, she has shown a clear passion for healthcare, producing high-quality work and applying her learning confidently in real-world contexts.

On placement, River has impressed with her compassion and strong work ethic, earning high praise from supervisors. As her placement supervisor shares, “River stands out with her passion, compassion and outstanding bedside manner.”

Winner: Gulshan Bi, Bradford College

She has made a significant difference to hundreds of students, delivering high‑quality careers advice, supporting UCAS applications and creating opportunities that broaden aspirations. Her inclusive, student‑centred approach ensures every learner feels heard, valued and supported.
